Too Much Choice?
Plugins, we all use them in the home studio, unless you have racks of outboard gear and lots of money. Even then you would probably have one outboard compressor possibly two, an EQ, a reverb and possibly some kind of other rack effect. Not 10 different compressors, 5 EQ’s etc etc yet we still use plugins in their multiples…we probably use too many because of the sheer amount of choice available. I know sometimes I have to pull myself back from a mix and look at how many I am using.
I have a challenge for both of us.
The next track you mix pick 5 of your very favourite and most useful plugins to use, put a limitation on yourself to work with these 5 plugins ONLY.
Try to not deviate from your 5 plugins, try to stick with them utilise them, get every ounce of tone and features from them.
I’ll list what I would use in a mix to get the most flexibility:
- Single-Band Compressor – for instruments, vocals and drums.
- Multi-Band compressor – for drums and overall mix.
- Equaliser – Everything!
- Tape Saturation – Drums, vocals and overall mix
- Reverb – Everything that needs it.
I am myself going to mix and master a song with 5 plugins. That will be a separate article and I’m looking forward to the challenge, I hope you will too!
